Telstra backlash will increase - Windsor | ||
Overwhelming voter disapproval is reason enough for the Government to abandon plans for the full sale of Telstra, according to Member for New England Tony Windsor. Mr Windsor made the comments in relation to the results of a recent McNair Gallup poll, which recorded voter dissent over the full sale of Telstra at 68 per cent across NSW. NSW voters were more approving of the sale than voters in other states, with disapproval figures ranging from 65 percent to 79 percent nation wide. He said while the figures showed a strong level of discontent among voters, he anticipated it would grow as more details were revealed. |
"The backlash over the sale of Telstra will only become greater as it becomes increasingly obvious how full of holes this so called deal is," Mr Windsor said. "There is no way the Government can force a private company to ensure they supply technology that hasn't even been invented yet," he said. "What happens if they say no? Is the Government really going to withdraw their licence and withdraw all service across the country?" The poll also revealed rural voters were more likely to slam the proposed sale, with voter dissent in the bush recorded at 76 per cent. He criticised The Nationals' plan to set up a trust fund to ensure communications infrastructure improvements in the bush and questioned plans by the Government to enforce service standard requirements for Telstra, should the sale go ahead.
