Peter Andren :
now is the time to have your say on Telstra's future | |

With dissension in the Nationals' ranks over the Telstra sale likely to increase, now is the time to have your say on Telstra's future and services in the bush in a new survey being delivered this week from Peter Andren, Member for Calare. "The Nationals' new Senator Barnaby Joyce is on the record saying he is not convinced the sale should go ahead - so there is no way the sale is inevitable," Mr Andren said. "My electorate newsletter is going out next week and I have included a survey on the Telstra sale and services in the bush - so fill it in, send it back reply paid and tell me what you think. "The survey is not only about the government's plan to privatise Telstra. I am again seeking feedback on service standards across the Calare electorate. "I am asking you to simply answer YES or NO to whether you support the sale of Telstra, and indicate if you have any problems with your phone, fax, mobile or internet services. "There are also questions in relation to infrastructure and maintenance and repair services, and space to raise any other issues you may have. |
"If you do not want the sale of Telstra to go ahead now is crunch time. The legislation is likely to be introduced by the end of the year and with the government taking control of the Senate next month, those senators who have doubts about the sale need to hear your voice. "The government's reviews of services in the bush have been nothing but snapshots in time. The only way to guarantee equal and affordable access to services and new technology is to retain public ownership of the country's biggest telco. "Any improvements in services in recent years have been the result of lobbying by community organisations and those few MPs independent of the political establishment. "Telstra currently earns the taxpayer $2B a year in dividends. This year's budget revealed the sale is no longer needed to retire government debt so the Treasurer's reason to sell Telstra is no longer relevant. It does not make economic sense," Mr Andren said. "The Deputy PM says the sale is inevitable, but members of his own party disagree with him. Country Australians need to stand up for themselves on this issue and make their voices on Telstra heard in the Canberra. Get your survey forms in as soon as you can," he added. Press release from Peter Andren, Independent Federal member for Calare, 8 Jun 05.
